The book Exiled: The Life and Times of Kevin Jamison starts with a narration by Ben Long about his friend Kevin —who reminds him of his favorite author Ernest Hemmingway— who, after graduating high school, tired of his lifestyle and wanting a change, bought a small ranch and a used Cessna 180 airplane and imposed a self-exile on himself to start a fishing and hunting guide business in the valleys of the Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho. But as his business flourishes, it is disrupted by a notice of his deployment to the front lines in Vietnam by the United States Military.

In order to escape his drafting in the military, Kevin rides into the thick canopy of pine trees in the backcountry mountains on his sturdy mount and is considered missing for the next thirty years, where, besides Ben Long, no one has seen him. Kevin meets a pair of children and their unconscious mother one day out and decides to help them. He brings them to his cabin for treatment, but as the woman wakes up, a new problem arises —she doesn’t remember anything. As days go by and memories come back bit by bit, the woman, Patricia Anne Albertson, finds herself and her two kids living with Kevin in his cabin.

Meanwhile, Kevin is suspected of a crime he didn’t commit by the local county police and the town folks —the rape and murder of Janice Marler, Trish’s sister. But Kevin can’t escape this time, no matter how far he runs away from civilization. With Trish by his side, Kevin tries to find his way back home from the depths of rumors, courthouses, and the suspicious eyes of the people. The book concludes with the mystery behind Janice’s crime coming to a close, as Kauffman ties up the plot in his beautiful style for the satisfaction of the readers.
